How long will it take to complete the survey?
We know your time is valuable. The survey could take anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes. You will see only the parts of the survey that apply to you.

Who should complete the survey?
The survey is intended for both people with physics training and people with physics careers. We are interested in people who have stayed in the field of physics and people who have left physics.

Why should I complete the survey?
Your participation is entirely voluntary; you are not required to answer the survey. There are absolutely no penalties for not participating. At the same time, physics is a small field, and the information we collect through this survey is an important way to promote a deeper understanding of the experiences of physicists across the globe.

What will happen to my answers?
All responses are kept on a secure computer that is accessible only to the members of the research team conducting this study. We will not release, publish, or disseminate any information that would permit the identification of any individual. Your answers will be kept absolutely confidential and will not be seen by anyone other than the members of the research team conducting the study. Final results will be presented as aggregated data only.

What happens if I cannot finish the online survey in one sitting? Can I return later to finish it?
You will need to finish the survey in one session. We require this to maintain the anonymity of the responses.

Is there a deadline to complete the survey?
Because of the nature of the survey, it is difficult to predict when the data collection period will end. We suggest you make time to complete the survey now in order to make sure that your experiences are reflected in the final summaries.

Why am I being asked to complete the survey even though I have already completed it?
Please accept our most sincere apology. We are not personally identifying or tracking respondents to the survey. If you get a reminder even though you have already completed your survey, you can simply ignore the reminder.

Whom can I contact with questions about the survey?
You may e-mail Casey Tesfaye, clanger@aip.org, with questions about the survey.

Who is conducting this survey?
Staff at the American Institute of Physics (AIP) developed the survey in conjunction with International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) conferences on women in physics. It is partially funded by a grant from the Luce Foundation.

How is it being distributed?
This survey is being distributed by representatives of International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) in 85 countries. Fourteen of these countries are distributing the survey through their physical societies. We already have a record number of responses, but we need more in order to analyze the results in better detail. Please pass the link on to your colleagues!

Is this the first Global Survey of Physicists?
This is the third in a series of global studies of physicists across the globe that has been organized through the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) working group on women in physics.

Why does the survey say it is "first to target both male and female physicists"?
Past surveys in this series of global studies organized through the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) working group on women in physics have concentrated solely on the experiences of women in physics. This survey will provide the international physics community with data about the situation of physicists worldwide, as well as focused information about women in physics.

Why is the survey not available in more languages?
We are grateful to the Luce Foundation for providing funding to translate the survey into eight languages. This is the first in this series of studies of global studies organized through the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) to be available in a choice of languages. In order to maintain the integrity of the data we collect, the translations of the survey were done in a structured and rigorous way. This process was quite expensive. We hope to obtain additional funding in future years to translate the next survey into even more languages.

How will the results be disseminated?
We will announce any reports released on the data through our data alerts service: http://www.aip.org/statistics/e_updates.html
You may visit this link to sign up for your own data alerts. You may sign up for alerts on only those topics that interest you; you should receive no more than about one e-mail message from us each month.
